I first gave them photography tips using some of my pictures as examples.  Then they painted box frames, which they later added pictures to.

Then we went outside and they took pictures using my tips.

 
I had asked them to do a mistake picture.  This one was where they took a picture of something coming out of the boy’s head.

This one was using a flash.  It brightened up her face causing less shadows.

Here’s one of them taking pictures of each other.

Then we went inside and they finish their photo boxes.  We asked them to bring 5-7 photos of their family, friends or  pets.  They used cardstock and photo supplies and pasted their photos on their boxes.

To see the excitement on the children’s face was all I needed.  It was awesome!

4.  Use fill flash when the sun is harsh.

5.  Have fun - Take pictures of your family, friends, bikes, pets, etc.

It is a cute picture, however, notice the background around her.  Now, look at this picture.

Doesn’t that look so much better and draw you in?  Don’t be afraid to zoom.  Play around with it.  Create a variety of different shots.

Are you taking pictures this summer?  Great places are at picnics, at the pool, the beach, the backyard, etc.  Here is a picture I took of my neighbor while at the pool.  It is not necessarily a portrait, but a great shot.  Notice how I zoomed in where nothing is distracting behind her.  It is also fun to get the water droplets in a picture.  They are on the goggles.

She stood in front of me and started posing.  I thought it was so funny because I didn’t tell her anything.  She did it automatically.  That is because ever since she was born, I took her portraits and posed her.  Now she does it automatically.

She tilted her body and was all ready for her picture.  If it would have been her actual portrait, I would’ve turned her body a little different, but she was having fun.  That is what makes it fun for you and your child when taking their portraits.  You can give each other ideas on how to pose.  Being natural and let them do what they want to do makes it fun for both of you.

My Very First Portrait Of My Daughter

With this post, I wanted to start from the very beginning and tell you how I started taking pictures of my children.  I had heard many stories from other Moms about their experience with a professional photographer.  Many were not good….

    They weren’t able to choose the pose they wanted.

    They had to buy a whole package where they just wanted a few pictures.

    Their children started fussing when they saw the camera.

    And many more

When I was young, I picked up a camera and just started snapping away.  I loved taking pictures.  When I was just out of high school, I bought my first 35mm SLR camera.  This is the type of camera that has the lenses that you can take on and off.

I took so many pictures.  Now that I’m thinking about it.  One day I created a backdrop out of black material and put my tennis racket on the backdrop and took a picture.  I guess that was in preparation of creating backdrops for my children.

Then when I was pregnant with my first daughter, I decided that I wanted to take her pictures myself.  I had no idea what I was doing.  The picture above is my first attempt.  I propped her up on pillows and put a blanket on top of the pillows.  I had a lot of fun.
